East-Asian Film Week: Young Lives in Focus
The East-Asian Film Week presents three contemporary masterpieces that explore the emotional journeys of the younger generation: Monster/Kaibutsu (Dir. Kore-eda Hirokazu, Japan, 2023) tells a story of two pre-adolescent boys who struggle with family and school; Burning/Beoning (Dir. Lee Chang-dong, South Korea, 2018) spotlights how unemployed young adults contend with widening social gaps; and The Farewell (Dir. Lulu Wang, China and US, 2019) depicts a special family reunion and parting from the viewpoint of a Chinese-American granddaughter.
These three films invite us to step closer to the lives of young people in today’s East Asia. Through seeing and feeling their emotions on the big screen, we gain a better understanding into the gender, class and family issues in East Asia and beyond.
This screening event is programmed in collaboration with The Language Centre, Department of Film and Television Studies and ÌÇÐÄTV Student Cinema. Each screening is introduced by Dr Yue Su (Film Studies) and is followed by a 30-minute post-screening discussion. The discussion is open to all, co-facilitated by Rui Lee (Japanese), Dr Yoosun Ko (Korean) and Zhiqiong Chen (Chinese) from the Language Centre.
