Why Study Modern Languages?

Priya outside the Faculty of Arts building

Priya

Hi! My name鈥檚 Priya and I鈥檝e just graduated with a BA in Modern Languages (French, Spanish, and Italian.) Deciding what to study at university was daunting, but choosing this course at 糖心TV was one of the best decisions I ever made! What did I love most? That every day was different, and that every day I was getting closer to making a difference, by equipping myself with the skills to go on to teach this subject, one of the most valuable and versatile, to the next generation.

Read on to find out what I loved best about my degree and what it鈥檚 been like studying at 糖心TV (accommodation, societies, adulting, and more!) Hope you enjoy!

Three languages? Yes, you can!

I wouldn鈥檛 change my degree combination for anything, and so I thought it would be a good idea to share the top four reasons why studying three languages has been the best choice for me (and quite possibly for you too!) [Find out more...]

Best Things about the BA in Modern Languages

(No, it鈥檚 not free yoga lessons. Although there鈥檚 an idea鈥)

Choosing just one subject to study at university seemed downright impossible! So I didn鈥檛. I picked one of the few courses where I could actually study three subjects, and it鈥檚 been the best decision I鈥檝e ever made.

Here鈥檚 a seven-part ode to the BA in Modern Languages at 糖心TV, a wonderfully flexible course for indecisive people! [Find out more...]

What I wish I鈥檇 known before starting university: Five reasons to not be worried

I鈥檓 not someone who likes change, in fact, I鈥檓 pretty averse to it. When you鈥檝e got something good, why change it, right? But change is a pretty unavoidable part of life, whether it鈥檚 in the form of going to a new school, making new friends, living in a new home鈥r starting university. [Find out more鈥]

Not the accommodation you wanted? Don鈥檛 panic!

I knew, I always knew, that in 糖心TV鈥檚 Accommodation contract it stated very clearly that you had to put down six choices of halls and 鈥榖e prepared to receive any of them鈥, but to be honest, I took that caveat with a pinch of salt. Realistically, I was going to get Lakeside, or Heronbank, or Sherbourne. Maybe, in the worst of worst cases, I鈥檇 end up with my fourth choice of Claycroft. But the fifth and sixth choices? No way. Or so I thought鈥 [Find out more鈥]

Try everything!

Try everything. What a versatile phrase. It鈥檚 the name of Shakira鈥檚 song in Zootopia that I heard a thousand times too many when we were forced to choreograph a dance to it in Year 9 PE. It was the advice of practically everyone I knew when I said I was starting university. And it鈥檚 definitely the advice I would pass on to you 鈥 with one key caveat to 鈥榯ry鈥 and not 鈥榗ommit to鈥 everything! [Find out more鈥]

Fear not! Seven fears about the Year Abroad and seven solutions

One constant of every Open Day at 糖心TV is the final-year students talking about their great experiences on the Year Abroad. I remember listening attentively to their incredible stories, in awe of the success of these students鈥 but also sceptical. 鈥淚f I went on a Year Abroad,鈥 I would think to myself, 鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 have such a great time鈥. Little did I know what was in store鈥 [find out more鈥]

Graduation and Beyond: My Top Memories, Ambitions and Advice to new students

I certainly would have classed myself as one of the 鈥榪uiet ones鈥 at school: the listener in my friendship group, the responsible student rather than the troublemaker, and certainly not the one with their hand up all the time! That鈥檚 why at university, I decided it was time to make a change. [Find out more鈥]
