Module Description
This module explores the so-called Generaci贸n del 27, a group of young artists whose aesthetic innovations challenged the artistic, social and sexual norms of early-twentieth century Spain. It focusses in particular on the relationship between theatre, cinema and painting, examining how these different forms intersected and mutually influenced one another during this period.
Through the study of plays by Federico Garc铆a Lorca, selected paintings by Salvador Dal铆, Joan Mir贸 and Maruja Mallo, as well as Luis Bu帽uel鈥檚 surrealist films, the module explores how these artists broke away from traditional forms of representation. It considers how these works responded to rapid technological change and an uncertain world, while also situating Spain鈥檚 avant-garde in connection to other European modernisms.
