These pages will remain as a memory to a dear friend and exceptional colleague who sadly passed away on the 23rd of July 2019. All who had the honour to know him will miss him. He would want everyone to read his poems, recollections and translations and they stand as a testament to his indefatigable spirit and his passion for telling stories.

Two Poems by Federico Garc铆a Lorca from 鈥� The Gypsy Ballads鈥�
I have chosen these two poems not only for the uniqueness of Lorca鈥檚 language, but also because of his concern for the plight of women in the Spain of his time.(more)
When I translate, I always try to aim for three things: clarity, adequacy of expression and unity.
In the first poem 鈥�The Gypsy Nun鈥�, Lorca describes the eagerness of the Nun to live without any social restrictions, and the pressure that the convent life brings to bear on her.
The second poem 鈥�The Unfaithful Wife鈥� is the only poem in the book written in the first person. It鈥檚 a critical view of two of the great forces in the theatre of the Spanish Golden Age: virginity and honour. It is very important to use the right word: maid for mozuela and soiled for the adjective sucia. In some cases I had to change the word for clarity in English: cuchillos ( knifes) for 鈥榥ails鈥�; los 谩rboles han crecido for 鈥榯he trees seemed taller鈥�, keeping the image of erection; horizonte (horizon) for 鈥榖ackground鈥� and nardos (spikenard) for 鈥榬ose petal鈥�.
