In the 1730s, the Dutch East India Company tried to compete with private individuals in ordering chine de commande. Cornelis Pronk, a well-known artist, was appointed to make sets of drawings for the decoration of Chinese porcelain dinner and tea sets. His first design, the so-called Parasol Lady, was such a success that unauthorised imitations and new varieties followed immediately. The design was popular for many decades in both the East and West and can be regarded as a great example of the early globalisation of a design on porcelain.
