The parishioners of All Saints’, Bristol, in the century before the Reformation Clive Burgess (Royal Holloway) This paper concerns itself with parish life, and achievement, before the Reformation, and will exploit the relatively abundant pre-Reformation archive of All Saints’, Bristol. It endeavours to do three things. First, it seeks to contextualise the pre-Reformation parish, placing it among the array of other ecclesiastical institutions constituting the Church as it then existed. As well as outlining some of the factors affecting behaviour in All Saints’ itself, the paper will also, very briefly, consider the motives that more generally inspired parishioners to act as they did. Second – and in the main part of the discussion – the paper will piece together some, at least, of the sustained efforts made by parishioners to embellish their parish church and to improve its capacity as a liturgical enterprise. By any standards, their efforts must be judged as strenuous and, as I will argue, as successful. The church was substantially rebuilt and extensively refitted and furnished in the course of the fifteenth century, and parishioners consistently contributed with marked generosity to the vessels, books and vestments available within the parish. All Saints’ also benefited (certainly from c.1450 onwards) from the services of a growing number of priests and clerks who, clearly, enabled the liturgy to celebrated with an increasing (and, indeed, noteworthy) sophistication. Third, as a theme that will be treated throughout the paper, attention will be devoted to the broader implications of the parishioners’ activities visible at All Saints’. Were their achievements in themselves extraordinary? Or is it, more simply, the fact that we can say something – and with some confidence – about the developments within this parish that is odd? The question is worth pondering. %&Vuvw•–—˜Ѓђ K V W i Ѕ Д Щ н р 4 5 > ?
