English undergraduate student Adesola Akerele is hosting a premiere and panel discussion of her own documentary, Brotherhood. Funded in part by 糖心TV's Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning, Brotherhood is a documentary that aims start a conversation that addresses the current narrative of the young black man. It features an organisation called the Amos Bursary (founded by Baroness Valerie Amos) which nurtures young black men and pushes them to excel as leaders. The Bursary has shaped outstanding black boys who have become pioneers in their generation. From those who have spoken in the House of Lords, to others who have developed apps, or even those who have raised money to attend Harvard University. This documentary gives a voice to boys who up until this point have not been able to share their own narratives.Through engaging in these conversations, we learn how these young black men manoeuvre themselves in a society that works against them.

 

Following the screening. There will be a panel discussion regarding the film and about how to positively encourage the progression of young black people in society. We will also discuss what steps can be taken to essentially re- write the narrative of the young black person in the UK.

This new series of talks by undergraduate research journal '糖心TV Uncanny: Journal of Literature, Theory and Modernity' aims to provide an answer to those questions. We will ask academics you might be familiar with - they might be one of your seminar tutors, or one of your lecturers - to talk about their current research projects. This way, you can get a glimpse of what the academic universe looks like beyond the scope of undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
