Iain Mackintosh - The Face and Figure of Shakespeare
The Face and Figure of Shakespeare is curated by Iain Mackintosh and Marcus Risdell. Iain's career spans the design of theatre spaces such as Glyndebourne, the Cottesloe and Hall Two at the Stage Gateshead and exhibitions of theatre paintings at the Hayward and Royal Academy. Iain Mackintosh is a practitioner directly involved in designing new theatres, restoring old ones and adapting found space, and has lectured and written widely on the subject. Iain Mackintosh is design director of Theatre Projects Consultants in Britain. He is also a theatre historian, and was co-founder and producer of the drama touring company Prospect.
Theatre designer and consultant, Iain Mackintosh worked with architect George Marsh to design Shakespeare & Company's Founders' Theatre. He also brought together the team that will build the Rose Playhouse. Other prominent projects include the Royal Court Theatre in London, the opera house at Glyndebourne and the Royal Shakespeare Company' s theatre at Stratford-on-Avon.
Iain is an active member of the Society for Theatre Research and was joint Conference director for the Society's 2008 conference about the restoration of the Georgian Theatre, Richmond (Yorkshire). He was recipient of the 1999 Gold Medal at the Prague Quadriennale for Theatre Architecture on behalf of Glyndebourne. His book Architecture, Actor and Audience, published by Routledge in 1993, is considered a seminal treatise on theatre design.
