Stupid Ancient History - Alexander the Great 356-323BC

Dave Midgley and Helen Taylor are Director of Humanities and Head of History respectively at Parrs Wood High School and have been teaching Ancient History at GCSE and A Level for longer than either of them would probably like to admit. James Hill is the Science technician Manager at Parrs Wood, long-suffering accomplice to their various shenanigans and resident non-expert in all things Ancient History.

Dr John Holton, Newcastle University addresses the 4 key topics in the GCSE specification: Alexander’s upbringing, campaigns, significant life events and command of the Macedonian army. The video focuses on the upbringing of Alexander and his adoption of Persian customs, drawing on prescribed sources and additional source material which can support learning at GCSE. The source material in this video includes literary sources such as Plutarch’s Biography of Alexander, Diodorus Siculus, Arrian clay tablets documenting the Battle of Gaugamela. Alexander the Great is one of the most celebrated military commanders in history. Born into the Macedonian royal family in 356 BC, he gained control of Greece and went on to conquer the Persian Empire, defeating its powerful king, Darius III. At its peak, Alexander's empire covered modern Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and part of India. As a result, Greek culture and language was spread into regions it had not penetrated before, and he is also remembered for founding a number of cities. Over the last 2,000 years, the legend of Alexander has grown and he has influenced numerous generals and politicians.

Tutored in history, morals and the principles of power and government by the philosopher Aristotle, Alexander became one of the greatest generals in history. He led his soldiers on an incredible series of conquests; from Greece to Iran, Afghanistan to India.
