The theme for this session is 'Coins, Conquest and Collaboration at the Beginnings of Roman Britain: the Worcestershire Conquest Hoard' by Dr Murray Andrews (UCL).
In October 2023 a hoard of 1368 Iron Age and Roman gold and silver coins was found near Bransford and Leigh, not far from Worcester in the shadow of the Malvern Hills. Buried in AD 55, it is one of the largest early Roman coin hoards ever found in Britain, and one of the largest hoards of the reign of Nero (AD 54-68) known from the entire Roman Empire. This talk presents the hoard in its wider archaeological and historical context, and highlights the campaign to secure its future in a public collection.
Dr Murray Andrews is Lecturer in British Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, and is leading research into the Worcestershire Conquest hoard. He has published extensively on British archaeology and numismatics, and has appeared in several episodes of BBC's Digging for Britain.
