Dido
Clive Letchford stepped aside from his normal role of language teaching to mastermind a semi-staged production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas which was given as part of a double bill with Marlowe’s Dido, Queen of Carthage. He directed from the harpsichord, having trained the soloists, chorus and his baroque string group Cabinet of Curiosities. The performance took place in the Levi-Fox Hall at King Edward VI School, Stratford-upon-Avon. The soloists were Sixth Formers from the school and other Stratford schools. In a programme note, he examined the parallels between Augustan Rome and London in the 1770s, in terms of the physical rebuilding of both cities and the establishment of a new political order.
